噫吁嚱！危乎高哉！蜀道之難，難于上青天。蠶叢及魚鳧，開國何茫然。爾來四萬八千歲，不與秦塞通人煙。西當太白有鳥道，可以横绝峨眉顛。地崩山摧壮士死，然後天梯石棧相鉤連。

Aieee, yikes! So precipitous; so high! How difficult the road to Shu is! More difficult than ascending to the blue sky. So obscure is the founding of Shu by Can Cong and Yu Fu! For forty-eight thousand years, you people of Shu have been cut off from the people of Qin. To the west is Mt. Taibai, where starts a narrow mountain path that cuts across Mt. Emei. The ground collapsed, mountains crumbled, and brawny men died; only thus could the steep stairs and stone trestlework be linked up.
